What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare?
The counsel implicit in this quote from W H Davies' poem 'Leisure' pervades this piece: in the slumberous burn of the sun overhead; in the lazy waddle of the people on the promenade. And it seems to me that the gulls too, are engaged in a hiatus from doing what gulls do (swooping, gliding, squawking, eating chips from rubbish bins), to just take time to watch.
